Currrently ranked number 1 on Netflix TV show is Riot’s new animation series, Arcane, which is based on the popular MOBA title, League of Legends. Inspired by Defense of the Ancients, Riot has developed a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) team-based strategy game where two teams of the five champions battle it out to destroy each other’s base. The multiplayer game boasts at least 140 playable champions and is one of the top games played across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. With raving reviews and cited as the world’s largest esports game, League of Legends peaked at over 100 million views with a concurrent viewership of 44 million for its 2019 World Championship.
Riot’s new venture into animated series, Arcane focuses on a dark fantasy which premiered on Netflix. It was produced by Fortiche, a French studio based in Paris. The story sets out on the origin of several League of Legends characters from Piltover and Zaun.
The show tells the story of two young orphaned sisters Vi and Powder(Jinx) who lived with their family in the derelict Undercity. They make a living by stealing scraps and parts of tech from the city above. Unfortunately, a heist that went wrong when the loot was revealed to be explosive crystals of arcane magic. The plot thickens as tension between the two city escalates. The first season has a total of 6 episodes split into Act 1 and Act 2.
Along the animated series, you will be able to catch the following Champions while the story unfolds:
- Vi
- Jinx
- Jayce
- Caitlyn
- Silco
- Mel Medarda
- Vander and Bolbok
- Viktor
Arcane is packed with many dramatic scenes and each episode has its tense moments. It is definitely something refreshing off a game title and watching your favourite champions come to life and fight scenes between characters were relentlessly tense. You do not need to play League of Legends in order to understand the story or plot. Streaming giant, Netflix is definitely pulling off a very good campaign with its foray into animation based off a video game.
